She Looks at Art from Both Sides Now

Roberta S. Rosenthal

"My speciality is watercolor and gouache botanical illustration, fine art, art instruction and design for corporations and garden institutions." Her art has appeared in Fine Gardening and Horticulture Magazines, among other publications and on postage stamps of the Republics of Palua and the Marshall Islands, both Micronesian countries.

Ms. Rosenthal teaches Professional Business Practices courses at the Catskill Art Society in Hurleysville, New York and also at The New York Botanical Garden. She teaches botanical art and Sumei-e (Oriental brush work) from her studio, owns RSR Designs, a graphic illustration business, and has been working as a professional artist, designer and illustrator for 35 years.

“It’s never boring. I’ve been wanting to do what I’m doing since I’m five.” Her history before this, when she was a graphic designer – one of the first – and fashion illustrator, textile designer and director of artist placement for the Graphic Artist Guild, is another volume.

Not only is Ms. Rosenthal a talented artist, plus organized with tons of energy, she’s a rare artist who is also a dynamite business person. So how does she get it all done and stay sane? She naps like a dog for a few hours a clip, then rouses and works like a sprinter.

“It’s a learned art of juggling and selecting what I want to do. One of the best things I do is create goals every year. I find that this goal setting allows me to alter my business and my life. Some years I have more personal goals and some years I have more business goals.”

Although flowers were always her specialty, she paints landscapes, abstracts, and Oriental pieces. She specializes in Micronesian plants.

Right now she’s painting blueberries for an exhibit called “Invasives and Their Alternatives," sponsored by the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators - Greater New York Chapter. She is Chairperson for the "New York Alive" exhibit.
