The Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens
Click here to listen about the garden
Donald M. Kendall, former chairman of the board and CEO of PepsiCo, conceived these spectacular grounds as an integration of architecture, landscape, and sculpture. He believes that art can spark creativity in the world of business.
It is an amazing landscape exhibiting superior thought and attention, a thorough knowledge of plants, a respect for what has come before, and a working effort to remain true to a vision. See this garden at least twice - the serenity of structure and shape in winter and the prettiness and scent in bloom time.
Late 1960s: Edward Durell Stone, architect, designed building and Edward D. Stone
Jr., landscape architect, laid out grounds adding about 6,000 trees from 38
species plus thousands of flowering bulbs
1970: building opened in complex of 7 square buildings linked by corner towers, with 3 courtyards and a central fountain
1981 to 1985: Russell Page, landscape designer, redesigned existing landscape to
embrace the sculptures, providing a harmonious cohabitation with them. He also
created intimate gardens and walks.
1985 to present: Francois Goffinet, one of the premier garden designers in the world,
in charge of garden development
Sculptures: 45 large-scale pieces of bronze, marble, steel, nickel, resin, granite and spruce by 20th century artists decorate the landscape. Mr. Kendall selects all sculptures.
